Green Environmental Management System GEMS
Following the VA lead, the Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS) employs processes that affirm environmental accountability into day–to-day decision-making and long-term planning.
Our GEMS Committee is proud to present our recent accomplishments.
WATER CONSERVATION
- No touch faucets have been installed on handwashing sinks throughout the main VA Outpatient Clinic to conserve water usage. 2. Automatic toilet flushing sensors have been installed on all toilets in the main facility. These devices conserve water and promote sanitation as well.
POLLUTION PREVENTION
- Electronic devices contain a variety of toxic components such as lead, mercury, arsenic and beryllium that can cause adverse health effects. The Alaska VA Healthcare System recycled 19,500 pounds of electronics during FY16. 2. During FY16, 147 pounds of hazardous waste was properly disposed of at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at the Anchorage Regional Landfill. 3. Universal waste is properly recycled. During FY16 the VA Outpatient Clinic recycled 143 pounds of mixed batteries and 62 pounds of lamps.
WASTE REDUCTION
- The generation of biohazardous waste has been reduced by more than 3% each year since 2008. During FY16, the VA Outpatient Clinic generated 4639 pounds of biohazardous waste. 2. Recycled paper and cardboard has resulted in a solid waste diversion rate of 55%. 3. Incinerated 352 pounds of non-regulated pharmaceuticals to keep medications out of landfills and water.
